Episode #1 North West – Kedah
Starting from her birthplace, Penang, Wanitha walks the streets rediscovering friendly faces and the passions that keep Penang’s food and culture unique, alive and vibrant. With Thailand to the north, India to the west and China to the east, this trading region of Malaysia is home to a multitude of cultures, traditions and cuisines. Penang has proudly received World Heritage listing. It is part of Kedah, the oldest state in Malaysia.
Episode #2 North East Coast - Kelantan and Terenaggnu
As we travel the exotic north east states of Kelantan and Terenaggu with Wanitha, the richness of the Malay landscape, food and lifestyle unfolds before us. Wanitha’s home stays in a traditional village exploring community cooking for the Kenduri - a community feast, where everyone in the village works as one family.
Episode #3 Central Highlands
Renowned for fertile mountain slopes, the Cameron Highlands is one of Malaysia’s prime tourist destinations. Home of many tea plantations, its’ abundant farms supply fresh produce to all over Malaysia and Singapore. Wanitha goes right to the source to see what the farmers are growing and how they are cooking and eating.
Episode #4 South West - Selangor and Johore
Heading south to the cosmopolitan capital Kuala Lumpur and beyond, we are reminded that the traditional Malay cuisine is influenced by Javanese ancestry and large minority populations of Chinese and Indian immigrants. Side by side with modern marvels like the famed Twin Towers, a huge industry of street hawkers keep this bustling, modern international city very well fed 24/7. How do they do it? Wanitha finds out ...
Episode #5 West Coast - Melaka
Wanitha goes to sea with the local fishermen and ends up at a Portuguese settlement where she takes part in the food preparation for the feast of St. Peter – an annual tradition of the ancient Portuguese fishing community... As the fleet is blessed,we prepare Ikan Pangang on the beach - the famous barbequed fish that combines the culinary traditions of East and West. In the same district Wanitha tries her hand at traditional dishes from the Nonya (assimilated Chinese) and Chetti (assimilated Indians) communities.
Episode #6 Sabah and Sarawak - Island of Borneo
Crossing the straits to the jungle island of Borneo, the home of the orang-u-tang, Wanitha goes looking for rainforest food among indigenous communities. Invited to an Iban village, Wanitha learns to cook, the best known dish ‘pansoh manok’ , chicken and lemongrass cooked in a bamboo log over an open fire. Will she also try the sago grubs, bamboo clams and temilok (marine worms) – maybe after a glass of local tuak, a sweetly fragranced, highly alcoholic home brewed rice wine.
